NEWARK – In the face of transit limitations brought on by the NJ Transit locomotive engineers strike, Newark leaders have taken steps to expand local transportation opportunities through the launch of “Via Newark,” a free weekend-only, on-demand transit service.

The six-month pilot program, developed in partnership with Invest Newark and TransitTech provider Via, is designed to help residents and visitors conveniently and affordably access cultural, educational and commercial destinations in the city’s arts and education district. Via Newark will officially launch on Friday, May 16 at 5 p.m.

Mayor Ras J. Baraka, Invest Newark CEO Marcus Randolph, Via East Coast Partnerships Lead Séverine Koen and local community members cut the ribbon on the Via Newark program on Wednesday, May 14.
